Are LeoVegas Casino winnings taxed in Ireland?

No. What you win at LeoVegas is yours in full. The tax questions start later, when the money earns interest, gets invested or is given away.

What to actually do after a big win

You owe nothing on the win itself. These are the four things that do matter once the money leaves the casino.

  • Keep the records

Download your LeoVegas transaction history and save each withdrawal confirmation. Banks can ask about the source of large lodgements, and LeoVegas can run its own source-of-funds checks.

  • Interest is taxed

Park €50,000 in a deposit account and the interest has DIRT taken off at 33% before you see it. The win is exempt, what it earns is not.

  • Investment gains are taxed

Buy shares or property with winnings and the growth is taxed under the normal rules. The exemption stops at the win.

  • Big gifts can trigger CAT

Handing money on counts as a gift to the person receiving it. The tax-free thresholds are €400,000 (Group A, a child), €40,000 (Group B) and €20,000 (Group C), plus €3,000 per giver per year under the small gift exemption.

That is the full list. There is no form to fill in for the win, no threshold above which it becomes reportable, and nothing to tell your employer.

Why Irish law leaves winnings alone

The key sentence is short. Section 613(2) of the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997 says: “Winnings from betting (including pool betting), lotteries, sweepstakes or games with prizes shall not be chargeable gains.” A slot spin or a hand of blackjack at LeoVegas is a game with a prize, so capital gains tax is out.

Income tax, USC and PRSI do not apply either, because a win is not earnings from a job, a trade or an investment. That holds for a casual player winning €20 and for someone who plays every night. Irish tax law has no special regime for heavy players. If you were ever running gambling as an organised business, rather than playing, get advice from a tax adviser: that is the one grey area, and I have not seen Revenue publish guidance on it.

Social Impact FundLevy on licenseesCreated by the 2024 Act, rate set by the Minister, not yet published

So the State does collect from gambling, just not from you. LeoVegas Gaming plc holds an Irish remote bookmaker’s licence (1012453) for its sportsbook and pays betting duty on Irish bets. The casino runs under its Malta Gaming Authority licence, MGA/CRP/237/2013. Malta does not change your position: the exemption is Irish law and applies wherever the operator sits.

What changed in 2025 and 2026

A lot changed for operators. For player tax, nothing did.

  1. 7 Oct 2025

Budget 2026 leaves betting duty at 2%

The Minister for Finance flagged a pool betting change for Budget 2027 but left the main rate alone. Player winnings were not touched.

  2. 5 Feb 2026

Gambling Regulation Act 2024 comes into force

The commencement order switched on the GRAI’s powers and a list of player protections, including a ban on paying for gambling by credit card and a duty on operators to let you set spending limits.

  3. 1 Jul 2026

    First GRAI betting licences

The Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland began licensing remote betting. Online casino licences come in a later phase, so LeoVegas’s casino still runs on its Maltese licence.

  4. Sep 2026

Talk of a higher betting duty

Trade press reports the Government is weighing a rise in the 2% duty for Budget 2027. Nothing is decided, and any change would land on operators, not on your winnings.

Myths I still see on Irish forums

  • Myth: wins over a certain amount must be declared to Revenue.

Fact: there is no threshold. A €500 win and a €500,000 jackpot are both outside tax.

  • Myth: winnings from a casino licensed abroad are taxable.

Fact: section 613(2) does not care where the operator is licensed. Malta, Gibraltar or a future GRAI licence makes no difference.

  • Myth: the 2024 Act brought in a tax on players.

Fact: the Act regulates operators and funds harm services through a levy on licensees. It adds no tax on winnings.

  • Myth: once winnings are tax-free, everything they earn is too.

Fact: deposit interest carries 33% DIRT, investment gains are taxed normally and large gifts fall under CAT.

  • Myth: you can offset gambling losses against other income.

Fact: winnings are outside tax, so losses are too. There is nothing to claim.

Staying in control matters more than tax for most players. If spending has crept up, our guide on how to self-exclude from LeoVegas walks through every limit, and the LeoVegas FAQ covers everything else.

More questions about tax on winnings

Do I need to declare casino winnings in Ireland?

No. Winnings are not income and not a chargeable gain, so they do not go on a Form 11 or any other return. Keep records anyway in case a bank asks where the money came from.

Are lottery winnings taxed in Ireland?

No. Section 613(2) names lotteries and sweepstakes alongside betting, so a Lotto win is treated the same way as a LeoVegas win.

Is there capital gains tax on gambling winnings?

No. The Act says winnings are not chargeable gains. If you invest the money afterwards, any gain on that investment is taxable in the normal way.

Does LeoVegas take tax off my withdrawal?

There is no Irish tax on winnings for an operator to deduct. What LeoVegas pays out is decided by its terms and the payment method, not by Revenue.

Can I give my winnings to family tax-free?

Up to €3,000 per person per year is exempt under the small gift exemption. Above that the gift counts towards the recipient’s lifetime CAT threshold, and tax at 33% applies only once that threshold is used up.

Does the tax position change if I play at a Maltese casino?

No. LeoVegas Gaming plc holds a Malta Gaming Authority licence, but your position depends on Irish law, which exempts the winnings wherever the operator is based.

Win it, keep it, keep the paperwork

Every euro you withdraw from LeoVegas lands untaxed. Save the withdrawal confirmations anyway. They are the easiest answer to a bank or solicitor who asks where a lump sum came from.
